Right now, many of us are working from home. In many ways it is a luxury. The daily commute to the desk is mere seconds and there is no traffic to delay us. There are no lines for tea or coffee and for me, the pace of life has slowed, which is nice. However, I’m sure at this stage the novelty is beginning to wear off. Thus, I have decided to create a list of some tips that I have found to be of use over the past few months and I hope will be of use to you in to the future.
Create a work only space
If you have the space, set up a work only zone i.e. a space that is dedicated to work. Ensure it is close to a socket to avoid the use of extension leads (which are, from personal experience, trip hazards!). Try to remember that this space is for work only, other areas of your home are used to socialise and relax in therefore, leave the work space when you’re on your breaks if you can.
Stick to your established routine
Try and wake up at your usual time and get ready for your day in the usual way. I have now replaced my “morning commute” time by reading a book or going for a quick walk. It’s a nice way to set yourself up for the day.
Keep an eye on your posture if using a laptop
Even as I am writing this I am somewhat slumped over the desk with my neck bent over my laptop. Laptops are ok for short snappy bursts of work but can become a problem when working on them for long periods of time. When using a laptop, I know my neck is usually down and my shoulders are rounded. You can try to combat this by using a laptop stand and a separate keyboard.
If you can invest in a good office chair
I spend between 6-8 hours a day working, usually seated! Your choice of chair can have an impact on your comfort, concentration and overall productivity. Ergonomic chairs are an excellent investment as they can be adjusted to fit your body and the way you work.
Some key considerations when looking for an ergonomic chair are
- Can you adjust the seat height?
- Can you adjust the arm height?
- Does it have lumbar support?
- Can the chair swivel?
- Does it have tilt tension? (allows you to adjust the pressure needed to rock back in your chair).
We have a variety of ergonomic chairs in stock. Please contact us via email – [email protected] or by phone 0906478788 if you have any questions.
