According to its designer Niels Diffrient the Humanscale Liberty task chair was based on the idea that a chair should be fully functional, yet minimal, and be made from mesh. The Liberty task chair in essence is a highly functional mesh task chair with curved lines and a very modern look and feel. The backrest comprises of three mesh non stretch panels. Diffrient worked closely with textile designer Elizabeth Whelan. The design was based on the concept of a tailored man’s shirt. The Liberty office chair is designed with mechanism-free recline, that is weight sensitive. The chair therefore provides responsive lumbar support without the need for external devices or manual adjustments.
