Moving in the office part 6

Welcome to part six in our series of blogs on the health benefits of activity and risks of inactivity in the office – It’s time to get moving! 

 

In our last blog we discussed how activity can reduce the risk of Type II diabetes and other problems associated with metabolism. In this weeks blog we will be discussing how sitting can have a negative impact on your cardiovascular health. 

Reduced Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

 

Research on sitting stems as far back as the 1950’s. British researchers at the time compared the rates of heart disease in bus drivers in London who sit during their working hours and London bus conductors who stand during their working hours. The research showed that the bus drivers experienced far more heart attacks than the bus conductors. 

Further research has found that adults who spend more than two hours per day sitting have a one hundred and twenty five percent increased risk of developing issues related to cardivascular disease. 

Other research concluded that men who spend greater than five hours a day sitting and who do not partake in regular exercise are twice as likely to be at risk of heart failure when compared to males who sit for fewer than two hours.
