What ergonomic adjustments to look out for when selecting a chair.

Picking the chair that is right for you.

If you do spend quite a lot of time sitting there are many chairs available that are designed to support your body while seated. When selecting a chair you should try and purchase a chair that has ergonomic adjustments. In last weeks we discussed the importance of lumbar support. In this weeks blog we discuss other ergonomic adjustments that will support your body while you sit.

Does the chair have adjustable arms?

Not every person has the same arm length. Therefore a chair should accommodate this. The Herman Miller Aeron plays host to this excellent feature.

Why is arm height on a chair important?

Correct armrest height is one of the key components of a comfortable chair. Armrests are in place to help avoid tension in the shoulders, neck and arms therefore giving you a comfortable sitting experience.

Ideally, where should my arms be when I’m sitting on my chair?

When you are seated on your chair, adjust the arm rest so that your arms are close to your side. Ensure that your shoulders are relaxed and that your forearms are supported equally.

Can the height of the armrests on an Aeron be altered and if so, how?

Yes, this aspect of the chair is fully adjustable. There are two types of levers (depending on the chair) that allow you to raise and lower the armrests – A lock in flipper lever and a rotating wheel. Both levers do the same job. When sitting on the chair, lift the lever or rotate the wheel. Hold the base of the arm support to raise or lower the height of the armrest to your desired height. In the case where you are using the flipper lever, lower the lever back into place to lock. Remember your forearms should be evenly supported and shoulders relaxed.

As stated before, task chairs are not simply one size fits all. Another feature that you should keep is mind is can you adjust the seat height.

How do I get the correct seat height?

Start with the seat at its highest setting. Engage the seat height adjuster lever until your legs and feet are comfortable. Ideally you want your feet to rest flat on the ground. The back of your knees should be at an open angle 90 degrees or more.

Any other information?

Having an ergonomic chair is a good investment not only is it helpful in creating an ergonomically correct workspace but it also aids in correct posture when seated.
